Welcome from Hon. Ehsan Bayat, Chairman

Thank you for participating in the Afghan Trusted Network and for sharing your individual resources, best practices and networks for the greater good of the Afghan people. We've come together in the Network knowing we can make progress in spite of difficult circumstances. Our actions are important not only because of their immediate impact, but also because they help strengthen the fabric of the Afghan society. Through our collaboration we can leverage our expertise and resources to provide education, jobs and training that contribute to a safer and more peaceful Afghanistan built upon prosperity and opportunity. We must reinforce traditional culture and values of family and children by meeting their basic human needs for healthcare, food, shelter and clothing. But most importantly, we will be bringing desparately needed hope to men, women and children who cannot meet the challenge alone, and helping them build a new future for Afghanistan.

Network for Afghanistan

Fatema Bayat, Executive Director: On June 30, 2009 at the Afghan Symposium for Humanitarian and Leadership Engagement in Washington, DC, a group of 125 leaders from all sectors met to form the Afghan Trusted Network to help strengthen the foundation of Afghanistan's civil society by engaging leadership and leveraging private, humanitarian and public sector capabilities. Our goal is to facilitate improved quality of life and generate training and education through mentoring, jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities for the people including the youth, the next generation leaders of Afghanistan.

Former Afghan Ambassador to the United States: The people and the government of Afghanistan are grateful for the friendship and support from the government and people of the United States. Your contribution of creating hope and jobs in Afghanistan is the best way of contributing to security in Afghanistan, stability in the region and security in the world... channeling the assistance of other organizations to reach out to Afghans, but most importantly helping out other for-profit and non-profit organizations to create a network to create a synergy between these different capabilities.

Former Ambassador to the UN, Iraq & Afghanistan: The challenge for the Afghans and for those who are helping Afghanistan is how to move out of this period of difficulty, of crisis, to meet the current needs in a desparate situation through humanitarian assistance and at the same time focus on economic development, security and political freedom, all of which must interact to produce success. This balance between meeting current needs with humanitarian help, and focusing on how to bring about development, self-reliance, and prosperity is extremely important, with the ultimate goal of Afghans able to look after themselves. This kind of self-reliance is a challenge, possible only through your continued commitment and action.

USAID is going to have a flexible and adaptable approach and we need you in the private sector, humanitarian, diplomatic NGO and civil society community as partners. We welcome your role in this. We don't have all the answers and we're looking for good models, good ideas we can replicate and good partners. We put in our government resources, and if you contribute some private sector or foundation resources, we can really move.

Afghan American Chamber of Commerce

The Afghan-American Chamber of Commerce (AACC) facilitates U.S.-Afghan business, investment, and trade ties through its Matchmaking Conferences and related activities, serves the interests of its members through various programs, and advocates for a free and open market economy in Afghanistan to strengthen U.S.-Afghan economic relations.

Canada Afghanistan Business Council

Canada Afghanistan Business Council facilitates bilateral trade and businesses opportunities between Canada and Afghanistan to create prosperity and development, and bridge gaps and overcome obstacles that may hinder investment and/or business prospects for Canadian and Afghan Businesses and Investors.

Afghan Sports Federation

Afghan sports Federation (ASF) is a non-profit organization based in Fairfax, Virginia area, for the benefit of amateur sports among the Afghan male and female youth and adults at every level of excellence in the United States and the world. ASF was formally established in 1998 by a group of Afghan soccer players and enthusiasts in the Metropolitan Washington DC area.

2011 Afghan Leadership Symposium:

The 2011 Afghan Leadership Symposium will be held on Thursday, May 19, 2011 in Washington, DC. Led by Honorary Chairman Ms. Doris Buffet, founder and President of the Sunshine Lady Foundation, and co-Chaired by Ms. Fatema Laya Bayat, President of the Bayat Foundation, Ms. Caroline Firestone, President New Hudson Foundation, the symposium will help identify practical tools to empower widows, mothers and children of Afghanistan. Co-hosted by Jessica Kurvant, Creative Associates, International, Diana Rowan Rockerfeller, Afghan Women Leaders Connect and Hon. David Aufhauser, Williams & Connelly, the event will bring together a number of experts and stakeholders committed to using existing networks to leverage assets and capabilities in innovative ways that bring value and empower the women of Afghanistan. 2009 Afghan Symposium

On June 30, 2009, over 120 stakeholders from the private, public and non-profit sectors met in Washington, DC to outline best practices that can help leverage on-going projects and collaborations to strengthen the foundation for a civil society in Afghanistan. AfTrustNet Member Appointed General Counsel to AU in Kabul

R. Michael Smith has accepted a position as General Counsel and Executive Assistant to the President of the American University of Afghanistan in Kabul effective November 15, 2009. He is also a member of the board of directors of the Afghan-American Chamber of Commerce and a Committee of 100 Member for the Bayat Foundation and a charter member of the Afghan Trusted Network project. Founded in 2006, The American University of Afghanistan is the country's only independent, private, non-profit, non-sectarian, co-educational institution of higher learning,

Faryab Orphanage and School Dedicated

The Bayat Foundation: The new Bibi Fatima Zahra School for Orphans was dedicated by Chairman Ehsan Bayat of the Bayat Foundation on October 30, 2009, the sixth new or reconstructed school for orphans built as part of the Bayat Foundation's commitment to Afghanistan's children. The facility is located in Maimana in the northern Afghan province of Faryab. With a total area of 13,000 square feet, the building consists of 12 classrooms, conference rooms, a dining room, store, laboratory, toilets and advanced drainage and electrical systems that meet international standards. The Bibi Fatima Zahra School for Orphans is designed to house 350 orphans who will attend classes in a well-constructed building for the first time, and was made possible by donors from across the United States, Canada and Europe. Building a Regional Tuberculosis Clinic

Marigold Fund: Construction is almost complete for the central outpatient clinic, office and distribution center for coordinating TB treatment in Takhar province. The provincial coordination is a joint effort between the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) and the World Food Program (WFP). The facility which currently houses the regional program, and Marigold’s management of this project will ensure best practices in TB clinic design and construction are utilized. Substantial fundraising efforts are underway to complete the project.

Afghan Reconstructive Surgery and Burn Center

Grossman Burn Foundation: The Grossman Burn Foundation in partnership with Direct Relief International opened a nonprofit reconstructive surgery and burn center in Kabul, Afghanistan in December 2008. This facility will help numerous burn victims awaiting treatment, in addition to making available quality medical treatment for injured military personnel awaiting transport back to the States. In 2008, Dr. Peter Grossman helped to develop a software program that will allow photographs of burn victims in remote places to be transmitted in real-time over satellite connections to a secure website that may be accessed by burn surgeons anywhere in the world, a new brand of “telemedicine” that creates the ability to view and make rapid assessments of burn victims as never before. The Grossman Burn Foundation is in the process of creating a humanitarian assistance “How To” manual for nonprofit, NGO's and humanitarian organizations worldwide on how to obtain help, step by step, for individuals in a critical situation.
